Sometimes I forget where I am. You see growing up in Saratoga area, of upstate New York, there was always Civil War reenactment at this time of year. It was drilled into me from a very young age that one of the turning points of the Revolutionary War was this epic battle of Saratoga for our independence from England.
The Civil War was just a footnote in our history. And when us northerners did a Civil War reenactment, it was always about the union troops putting old Johnny Reb on the run.
Now that I’m a Johnny Reb myself, it’s easier to look into the hearts of both sides and see the twisted anguish we all have. It seems we never ever learn from our mistakes and it becomes easier to look back then to look forward.
